Hip replacement surgery involves replacing a damaged hip joint with artificial material, usually metal, ceramic or plastic. The operation is typically performed under epidural (spinal) or general anaesthetic and will be open or keyhole surgery, depending on the individual. The artificial hip joint will either be cemented (fixed) or uncemented, in which case the new joint will be roughened to encourage bone to grow into it, strengthening the joint.
